Webster, N.Y. (WKBW) - A White House petition requests Medals of Freedom be awarded to members of the West Webster Fire Department killed or injured in an ambush that happened on Christmas Eve.

Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were shot to death after responding to a fire on Lake Road in Webster. Two other firefighters Joseph Hofstetter and Ted Scardino were injured in the attack. They will also be honored. The petition needs 25,000 signatures total by January 27th to be considered by the Obama Administration.

In the meantime, Chiapperini and Kaczowka have been laid to rest. Family, friends, co-workers and first responders across the state and the country honored their memories.

"Mike was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, and he was my mentor," Webster Fire Chief James Deisenroth said.

Kaczowka's brother spoke at his funeral.

"I will always remember him as an optimistic, loving individual, with a contagious smile," Derek Kaczowka said.

More than two thousand signatures have already been gathered. Those close to the tragedy said this honor is well deserved for these men. Both Hofstetter and Scardino are still recovering at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
