Perry's whips up lactose-free ice cream

Examples of irony include the fireman whose house burns down, the policeman who gets robbed or the lactose-intolerant ice cream man. But a new Perry's Ice Cream Co. Inc. flavor allows those who are lactose-intolerant to enjoy ice cream without discomfort.

The Akron-based ice cream manufacturer surveyed 400 consumers who revealed that 19 percent were lactose intolerant or have a family member who is. Fifty-four percent were interested in lactose-free products. The result was Lactose-Free Vanilla, which is available at ice cream stands and retail locations throughout New York, Western Pennsylvania, Northeastern Ohio, Vermont and Virginia.

Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk-derived dairy products. Lactose intolerant individuals have insufficient levels of the lactase enzyme that changes lactose into glucose and galactose in their digestive system.

Perry's Lactose Free Vanilla was unveiled with new flavors revealed at company headquarters on March 22 as part of a panel taste test. On that date, the company also unveiled other new flavors to be sold at area ice cream stands: Movie Time, Oh My, Cherry Pie!, Queen of Hearts and Sponge Candy. New retail products include All-Natural Black Cherry and 6-pack Party Sandwiches.
