The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Paediatric Society have issued a new policy statement recommending doctors oppose children participating in boxing, according to a USA Today story.

"We're saying, don't put kids in a sport where hitting the head is condoned and encouraged," statement co-author and chair of the Canadian Paediatric Society's Healthy Active Living and Sports Medicine Committee Dr. Claire LeBlanc, tells USA Today.

It is estimated that approximately 18,000 under age 19 participate in boxing in the U.S.
