Niagara Falls, NY (WKBW) - A Niagara Falls doctor nicknamed 'Dr. Feel Good' and 'The Pill Doctor' is now under arrest, charged with illegal distribution of controlled substances. Dr. Pravin Mehta, whose medical practice is located on Main Street in the Cataract City is accused of freely writing prescriptions for pain medication to patients without proper examinations or professional measures. Authorities say he prescribed twice as many pills as all the doctors in Niagara County combined. Some residents who live by Mehta's office are not surprised by his arrest.

"There were tons of people hanging out there all day long," said Ken Pomichter, who lives nearby. "They go in for about two minutes then leave. They're not there for an appointment, just there to pick something up. It was a constant stream of traffic. It just seemed like an unusual situation for any doctor's office"

A patient of Mehta is defending the doctor and claims he went out of his way to screen his patients.

"Dr. Mehta is a good man. He tries to take care of his patients but there are people out there on drugs, crack cocaine, and illegal drugs who come here and try to get pain medication from him," said Former Patient Ashley Evrard. "He doesn't know they're on drugs. He recently started doing a urine test."

The charges against Mehta carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
