CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) - This is the first year of the standardized tests called "Common Core Assessments."
These tests are being used in New York State and unlike prior versions, parents cannot opt our on behalf of their kids and state rules require 95% participation in school in order for them to get funding.
Studnets in 3rd - 8th grade at Cheektowaga Central Schools completed the state's new standardized tests in English and Math.
Even though the results won't be ready until August, the State Education Department anticipated kids would perform below grade level, since the new tests were designed to be more challenging and text intensive.
"if you stick an adult in a room and ask them to complete the task in 90 minutes, you want to have some educated adults that would have a problem," said 8th grade teacher Jullian Nogaro.
So we found Amanda Vallone, a Cheektowaga resident preparing for a work presentation. We gave her some sample questions from the 5th grade test.
