BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Michael Caputo, the campaign manager for Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino offered his resignation Thursday, but Paladino insisted he stay on.
Caputo tells Eyewitness News that he offered to resign following a firestorm that erupted after Paladino made comments to a group of Orthodox Jewish leaders downstate last weekend. Paladino did not accept, and insisted he remain on the campaign. Caputo offered no additional comment.
Caputo claimed responsibility for the comments Paladino made regarding gay rights. Those comments were in part written by Paladino's hosts.
Paladino later apologized for the comments, which led one Jewish leader to withdraw his endorsement of the GOP candidate.
Paladino will face-off against Andrew Cuomo and five other gubernatorial candidates Monday night during a debate on Long Island. Eyewitness News reporter John Borsa will be there to cover the event.
