SOMERSET, NY (WKBW) - Officials in the Town of Somerset approved a proposal Tuesday night to rezone a 179 acre site to allow for the possible construction of a multi-billion dollar Verizon data center.

The communications giant is considering the Niagara County site for the construction of three, 300,000 square foot buildings to house a data center.

The project would lead to hundreds of well paying jobs and create an estimated economic impact of about $500 million a year.

Verizon is hoping to begin construction next month, but still must purchase the land and submit detailed site plans to the town. The company is also waiting to hear the amount and type of tax breaks and incentives that will be offered.
