BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - A large group of nurses and friends of the New York State Nurses Association gathered outside of ECMC Wednesday afternoon to hold a vigil in honor of the nurse allegedly attacked by a patient there last week.

22-year-old Terrance Caldwell was a patient in the psychiatric ward when, according to court records, he charged the nurses station and attacked nurse Kelly McCain.

McCain was allegedly punched and kicked in the head and struck with a telephone receiver.

Nurses and community supporters gathered outside of ECMC Wednesday to show support for McCain, and to work with the hospital to make changes and make the work environment safer for staff.

In response to the attack the hospital immediately added security to that level of the facility and additional security is now making more frequent rounds on all of the units.
