Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WKBW) - Meet 54-year old Donald Buszek.

"They call me Gus," Buszek said.

Gus is a former Marine, skilled Machinist at Moog and now, in his fifties, a volunteer fire fighter at South Line Fire Department in Cheektowaga.

"Why did I get involved with the fire department? I just thought it was something I could do for other people," Buszek said.

In training just about a year ago, Gus went head to head with people half his age.

"During the time in Fire 101, I was with 20-year-olds, 18-year-olds. They are looking at it as if he could do it, I could do it," Buszek said.

South Line Fire Chief Todd Roland said Gus is an inspiration to everyone at the department.

"People like Gus who are very busy and make time to volunteer. He's very good at it, his age, his gumption," Roland said.

Even his high school sweetheart said she is proud of all that her husband has accomplished. She decided he deserved a quick smooch for our camera.

"I appreciate my wife sticking it out. It's been a long haul with a lot of sleepless days," Buszek said.

Gus said in addition to his wonderful wife and family, he found another great love in his life..

"You got your family at home and you have your family here and it's a strong bond, too," Buszek said.
