BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - A massive manhunt has come to an end for a Niagara Falls man wanted for the murder of a police chief's daughter in North Carolina.
34-year-old Michael Neal Harvey was arrested in Niagara Falls by the FBI and U.S. Marshals Monday morning for the murder of 23-year-old Valerie Hamilton. Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are en route to New York to interview Harvey and work on the extradition process.
Harvey was picked up at 5620 Stephenson Street at a friends home around 10:30 a.m. Monday morning. He was found on a couch high on heroin. The homeowner has not been arrested at this time.
Police also found the stolen vehicle that Harvey was driving behind the Summit Park Mall parking lot burned out inside.
Harvey has been living in Charlotte, North Carolina, but is originally from Niagara Falls. Harvey was convicted of rape 14 years ago in Niagara Falls and is a registered sex offender.
North Carolina Police say Hamilton, the daughter of a police chief there, was last seen with Harvey at a bar in Charlotte. Hamilton's body was found Sunday morning in a storage facility nearby.
Eyewitness News spoke Sunday with the family of the man wanted for murder, who maintain that Michael Harvey is innocent, saying he couldn't have killed anyone.
Harvey is scheduled for arraignment in Niagara County Court on Tuesday where he faces kidnapping and murder charges in Charlotte.
