Niagara County Sheriff Seriously Injured In Accident

TOWN OF PORTER, NY ( WKBW ) A car crash involving a Niagara County Sheriff's deputy is under investigation.

The incident happened on Lake Road near Ransomville Road shortly after 1a.m. Monday morning.

Officials say a patrol car driven by 36 year old Deputy Allen Gerhardt slammed into a guard rail. Gerhardt was on his way to assist other deputies at the scene of another crash when he lost control of his cruiser.

Gerhardt was rushed to Erie County Medical Center with serious injuries.

In a late morning news conference, Sheriff James Voutour told Eyewitness News that Gerhardt joined the Niagara County Sheriff's Office in August of 2008. Prior to this Gerhardt was a Parks Police Officer with New York State.

Deputy Gerhardt is also a Pilot with the New York Army National Guard and is an Iraq War Combat Veteran. Voutour noted his wish was to come home and guard the streets of his hometown, including Newfane.

Deputy Gerhardt is married and the father of three children.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies caught up with 34 year old Todd Hauser, who was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.

In a release obtained by Eyewitness News, Niagara County Sheriff's report that on Monday morning at approximately 1:21a.m., a Niagara County Sheriff's Deputy reported to Niagara County Sheriff's Office Dispatch that a vehicle struck an unoccupied, parked vehicle and left the scene in the area of Youngstown-Lockport Road and Ransomville Road in Ransomville.

After the suspects vehicle came to a stop, the occupant fled the scene of the accident on foot.

After an area search, the Lewiston Police ( who were assisting) located a male suspect.

The subject, Todd Michael Hauser of Ransomville, was identified as the driver of the vehicle and arrested on the following NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law charges:

1192 sub 2- Driving While Intoxicated
600-1a - Leaving the Scene of a property damage accident
1128 - Moved from lane unsafely.

Hauser was arraigned in Porter Town Court where bail was placed at $5,000 / $10,000 and a return court date was set for July 19th, 2011.
