Niagara County Schools Remain Open Despite Weather Concerns
NIAGARA FALLS, NY (WKBW)- Some Niagara County Parents are upset that their children had to brave the wicked weather to get to school Tuesday. Many students in Erie County enjoyed a day off from school due to the storm, but many students up north were not so lucky. Parents with children in the Niagara Falls City School District voiced concerns about keeping school open Tuesday, since many students walk to school.
"As a parent I wonder what's important, the safety of a child or opening the schools?" said Bionca Allen, who has three children in the district. "It's not a nice day. It's very windy and very cold but here we are."
Many described a night filled with howling winds and heavy rain because of the storm, but according to school officials no Niagara County Schools closed since the area dodged most of the severe weather.
"Luckily, we missed the brunt of the storm. Of course, parents always have the option of keeping children home if they feel that is best. There is no penalty; children simply make up any missed work. Our buildings are secure, all power is on," said Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent Cynthia Bianco.
