NEWFANE, N.Y. (WKBW) The announcement by Eastern Niagara Health System that it will end in-patient and surgery services at its Newfane Hospital site has caused an angry reaction from community members.

Over the next few months, in-patient care and surgery services will be ended at Newfane hospital with those services only being offered through the Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport which is nine miles away.

The 70-year old Newfane Hospital will be converted into an out-patient facility with a 24-hour emergency room.

The hospital restructuring will also put 60 full-time employees out of work.

Community leaders and residents in Newfane and surrounding Niagara County communities have been very critical of the plan, and they are taking action to fight against it.

A new community action plan is being unveiled Thursday night at 7pm in Olcott to try and save the Newfane Hospital.
