NYS (WKBW) - Talks are already underway in Albany about changing New York's gun laws in response to the Connecticut school massacre. Currently New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the union.

But there's concern the current laws, which already ban several assault style weapons, are not severe enough.

Some lawmakers think we need to increase penalties for those breaking the current gun law, especially for those caught smuggling illegal guns into New York from state's where assault weapons are not banned.

The governor told an Albany radio station he is ready to act.

Several republican leaders in Albany are backed by the NRA but it's unclear where many of them stand. Most lawmakers seem reluctant to speak out about this until it's at least brought to the floor for discussion.

When will a bill be introduced, and just how strict will it be?

Governor Cuomo will address those topics in our next half hour.

Now the NRA will also be speaking out about the issue at a press conference this morning 10:45.

We will have all the details on Eyewitness News at Noon.
