Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) United States Senator Charles Schumer tells Eyewitness News that information he has received shows that the two suspects arrested in Canada planned to attack targets in the US.

"What we do know is these terrorists were aided and abetted by others and had planned to create a terrorist incident somewhere in New York. There is a lot of chatter online that they {investigators} have listened to. We are not exactly sure where. It could have been the Whirlpool Bridge, it could have been somewhere else, but they planned to do a terrorist plot by blowing up tracks and having a train crash," said Senator Schumer.

30-year old Chiheb Esseghaier of Montreal and 35-year old Raed Jaser of Toronto were arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Monday.

It is believed that the men were looking to target the Amtrak Maple Leaf route that runs from Toronto to New York City.

The Maple Leaf train crosses the Whirlpool Bridge and makes stops in Niagara Falls, downtown Buffalo, and Depew.

The Senator added that no travelers were in imminent danger because authorities had been monitoring the two men for some time.

Officials believe the two suspects had connections with underground elements of Al-Qaeda in Iran.
