BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - The 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO) takes place Tuesday night, and events are scheduled all across Western New York.
Various events throughout area communities will feature fun and interactive activities while focusing on crime and drug prevention in neighborhoods.
National Night Out started in 1984, and last year involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 36 million people participated in NNO 2009.
The program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention and awareness, while generating support for, and participation in local anti-crime programs. Organizers also hope to send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
