(Batavia, N.Y. -release May 18, 2011) – New York State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt (144th District) joined New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico and Major Christopher Cummings, Troop “A” Commander, to honor 15 State Police members from Western New York who lost their lives in the line of duty. The Annual Troop “A” Memorial Service was conducted at Troop “A” Headquarters in Batavia, N.Y. Several family members of the fallen Troopers along with representatives from federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies attended the ceremony.
Major Cummings sadly announced that the name of Trooper Kevin P. Dobson was added to the memorial stone this year as he died on March 26, 2011 after being struck and killed while issuing a traffic ticket on the I-290 in the town of Tonawanda. Major Cummings praised the Troopers for their dedication to public service and their willingness to risk their lives to protect others. Major Cummings quoted scripture by saying “Greater love has no one than this: that he lay down his life for a friend” and he said that the Troopers exemplified heroism at its best by giving their lives not for friends, but for total strangers.
Assemblyman Hoyt thanked the officers and their family members for their bravery and sacrifice and he emphasized the need to publicize the “Abrose-Searles Move Over Law” to protect emergency responders on the highways. He presented New York State Assembly Proclamations honoring Trooper Dobson to his life partner, Bridget, his father Richard Sr., and his brother, Richard Jr.
The ceremony began with a posting of the American and New York State Flags followed by the singing of the national anthem by Trooper Daniel Brown from the Western Special Operations Response Team (SORT). Retired Trooper Mark Weber, Assistant Pastor of the Yorkshire Free Methodist Church, provided the opening invocation and a closing benediction. A wreath of flowers was placed by the memorial stone by Mrs. Melody Kwilos and Trooper Randy Kubasiak, Troop G – SP Northway Satellite, the widow and son of slain Trooper Gary Kubasiak, and Ms. Bridget Hastings and Mr. Richard Dobson Sr., the life partner and father, respectively, of Trooper Kevin Dobson. The Roll of Honor was read by Captain Steven Nigrelli, Zone 2 Commander.
