On July 28, 2013 at approximately 6:08am, the New York State Park Police received a 911 Call, reporting an adult male accidentally fell into the lower Niagara River, in the area of the Whirlpool. The friends of the victim stated they were fishing near the Whirlpool when they observed him falling into the water and then swept towards the middle of the river by the swift current. Patrol units responded immediately and searched for the victim. Niagara Falls Fire Dept., Erie County Helicopter, United States Border Patrol, United State Coast Guard, Ontario Park Police, Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Dept also assisted in searching. The victim has not been located at this time.
While searching the Lower Niagara River Erie County Air One helicopter located a body on the Canadian shore further upstream from this incident. The body was recovered by the Niagara Park Police Service in Ontario.
This incident is being investigated by Niagara Regional Police service and Niagara Park Police Service and is unrelated to the ongoing search is being conducted on the U.S. side of the river.
