BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Sabre forward Patrick Kaleta has been suspended for five games for shoving New York Rangers forward Brad Richards head-first into the boards during Sunday's match-up.

The NHL handed down the sentence Monday afternoon, following a 3:00 p.m. phone hearing between Kaleta and the league's Department of Player Safety.

Kaleta received a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct on the play, leading to two Ranger goals.

Richards remained on the ice for several minutes, but was able to return to the ice and finish the game.

Shanahan explains the league's decision in a video post on the NHL website, saying Kaleta is a repeat offender and that he had, "ample opportunity to make a better decision."

Kaleta will also be fined just over $76,000. The earliest he could return to the lineup is March 17th.
