BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - New information is coming out about the beating death of a 10-year-old boy, during the trial of the boy's stepfather.

Prosecutors now say the boy was stabbed in addition to the beating.

During opening statements, the prosecution began by going into depth about how badly Ali Mohamad Mohamud allegedly beat 10-year-old Abdifatah.

Mohamud is charged with second degree murder in the April murder of his stepson.

Prosecutors say Mohamud drowned Abdi in a bathtub, before stabbing and then beating him nearly 70 times with a wooden rolling pin.

The prosecution says Abdi had injuries to nearly every part of his body. The back of his skull even opened and was separated from the spinal column.

The prosecution also says that Mohamud confessed to his supervisor at The Buffalo News, where he worked and told officers with the Buffalo Police Department where to find the evidence.

Defense attorneys says Mohamud denies all accusations in the trial. They reminded the jury that if there is any reasonable doubt, Mohamud must be acquitted.

The first witness to testify was a neighbor, who saw Abdi trying to run away that evening. Mohamud allegedly told the neighbor that Abdi ran away because he did not want to do homework.

The neighbor says she convinced Abdi to go home with his stepfather. She says Mohamud promised his stepson that he would not hurt him, to which Abdi replied "you always say that."

Abdifatah's mother is next on the stand.

Eyewitness News will bring you the latest on the trial at 5 and 6 pm.
