Buffalo, NY (WKBW-Release)
Following its latest commitment to play a significant role in the revitalization of the Inner Harbor area of downtown Buffalo, Seneca Gaming Corporation announced that it is actively seeking design and engineering services for the construction of a new Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino.
The company issued a Request for Proposal to architectural/engineering firms to design a casino on the Seneca Nation of Indians’ nine-acre Buffalo Creek Territory, where Seneca Gaming Corporation has operated a slots-only casino since 2007. Today, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino features 457 slot machines and attracts more than 750,000 visitors per year.
While final design and programming decisions will be determined with the selected design firm, Seneca Gaming Corporation is seeking to build a team that will help create a casino property that complements the overall development effort that is taking place in Buffalo’s Inner Harbor area. To that end, the company has expressly stated that the selected design team must preferably include a local architect that understands the area’s history, appeal and significance.
“The Buffalo Creek Territory brings together the past and future of both the Seneca Nation and the City of Buffalo in a very unique way,” said Karen Karsten, Chairman of the Seneca Gaming Corporation board of directors. “This area is part of the Seneca Nation’s ancestral home, and also reflects the industrial past of the City of Buffalo. We believe this area will be an important part of Buffalo’s future, with the Nation’s Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino playing a central role in revitalizing the vibrancy of the Inner Harbor area.”
The search for an architectural team is a continuation of the significant investments that Seneca Gaming Corporation and the Seneca Nation have made at the Buffalo Creek Territory over the past five years.
The current Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino was originally opened in July 2007 and subsequently expanded in the spring of 2008. In March 2010, Seneca Gaming Corporation completed another expansion which brought the casino to its current size.
The company made significant investments to begin construction before economic conditions caused the work to be suspended in 2008. Seneca Gaming Corporation officials said that they will work with the design team to incorporate as much of the materials and infrastructure currently on the site into the new design.
“The economy is in a somewhat improved state as compared to when we suspended construction,” said Robert Chamberlain, Senior Vice President of Design and Construction, Seneca Gaming Corporation. “Even though our ultimate design plan for Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino may change to reflect new economic and business realities, we do want to maximize the use of the investment we have already made in piles, foundations, site work, utilities, infrastructure and steel to the extent possible.”
Today’s announcement comes just a week after Seneca Gaming Corporation and the Seneca Nation of Indians announced a commitment of $1 million to help fund community beautification projects in the neighborhoods surrounding the Buffalo Creek Territory.
“We strongly believe that the growth and success of our business and the growth and success of the surrounding community will go hand in hand,” explained Cathy Walker, Seneca Gaming Corporation President and CEO. “As more people discover the excitement that Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino offers, we want them to also experience all of the excitement of a beautiful, rejuvenated Inner Harbor area.”
