HAMBURG, N.Y. (WKBW) - A tragic accident took the life of a man respected and loved by the Hamburg community.
"He was a great dad and cared for his kids, and helped in many ways in making sure our community is better," Town of Hamburg Recreation Director Marty Denecke said.
Allan Wittmeyer, 48, is remembered fondly as a loving dad, neighbor and well-respected member of the community. Neighbors said he was deeply involved with the Hamburg recreation program, coaching sports in youth program.
His life was cut short after a deadly motorcycle Tuesday night.
"He was just a good guy. It's a tragedy. Our condolences go out to the family and it's just really a shock," Neighbor Bob Ryan said.
Authorities said Wittmeyer was driving his motorcycle on U.S. 20 just South of Lakeview Avenue when he crossed over the yellow line and hit semi truck head on. He died on the scene.
Now, the community he served is missing this dedicated family man.
"Even though he had the rough exterior He had a big heart and really enjoyed being with the kids. He left a mark with people at Hamburg little league," Denecke said.
As for the driver of the semi in the crash, he escaped without injury just as the cab of the truck went up in flames. Police continue to investigate the cause of accident.
