CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) - Traffic is running smoothly on Walden Avenue now after a fatal motorcycle crash shut down all lanes early Friday morning.

"The scene was pretty horrific," Cheektowaga Lt. Steven Berecz said.

1:30 a.m.

That was the fatal hour for a Hamburg couple taking a late night spin on their motorcycle.

"The motorcycle was traveling east bound on Walden Avenue, and the vehicle was exiting HSBC Bank," Berecz said.

The driver of the motorcycle was James Drozdowski, 44, with his passenger and girlfriend Christine Aman, 45. They apparently slammed into a PT Cruiser driven Karol Olkowski, 40.

The couple was thrown from their bike and pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the PT Cruiser wasn't injured but he was treated by Rural Metro Ambulance and released at the scene," Berecz said.

Both Drozdowski and Aman were wearing helmets but still suffered fatal injuries. There was no indication that speed or alcohol were factors in this accident at this time, but the Cheektowaga Police Department is investigating. Autopsy and toxicology reports will be done on both victims.

Authorities said this tragic occurrence isn't rare. It is only April and there have been more than a half a dozen fatal motorcycle accidents in the region. The most recent accident took the life of a man in Genesee County in the beginning of this week.

"It's early in the season, and people are unfamiliar with bikes being back on the road. Slow down and keep an eye out for motorcycles. They are very hard to see, so keep your eye out and let them be safe," Berecz said.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the PT Cruiser. The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking witnesses of the crash to come forward with any information. If you saw the crash call the Cheektowaga Police Department at 686-3510.
