BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - A North Collins mother who pleaded guilty to the murder of her own daughter received the maximum sentence in court Tuesday. Eva Cummings was accused of running a 'house of horrors,' where she routinely tortured and abused her mentally and physically handicap daughter, 23-year-old Laura Cummings, and eventually smothered her to death. Cummings was sentenced to 57 and 1/3 years to life in prison.
Prosecutors say this is one of the worst cases they have ever seen, saying Laura Cummings endured years and years of horrific torture and abuse by her own mother and brother.
"It's the worst case I have ever seen. The worst case investigators have ever seen. The amount and duration of abuse that Laura Cummings suffered is unimaginable and the public only knows a few details," said Assistant District Attorney Thomas Finnerty. "She was beaten every way imaginable, sexually abused in almost everyway imaginable, scalding water was thrown on her repeatedly. The autopsy is mortifying."
Cummings Lawyer Joseph Terranova, says his client is 'flawed' but believes all the blame should not be directed at Cummings.
"There were county employees that could have rescued laura cummings but didn't. There were people in the town of North Collins that knew what the situation was, because it existed for some time."
The son of Eva Cummings, Luke Wright is also accused of raping and abusing his sister and faces a criminal trial early next year.
