The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the number of children treated for concussions and other brain injuries in hospital emergency rooms increased by 62 percent from 2001 to 2009, according to the Washington Post.

According to CDC data, 153,373 children 19 and younger were treated in 2001, compared to 248,418 in 2009. The increase is due to a combination of factors, according to the report, including increased participation in sports and recreation activities, and increased awareness of head injuries by parents.
