HAMBURG, NY ( release ) Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that a missing Hamburg woman who may have been suffering from early stages of dementia was located this afternoon in a remote area in the Town of Wales.
Information had previously been received from the Village of Hamburg Police Department that they were attempting to locate Janice E. Maleski, age 66, who had not been seen since Monday.
A call was received late this afternoon from a concerned resident, reporting that a suspicious vehicle was parked in a field off of Wales Creek Road, near Centerline Road, in Wales. The first arriving deputies immediately determined that the car was that of the missing woman, and began a search of the area, under the direction of Sergeant Joseph Belden.
Sergeant Belden located the woman a short time later in a wooded area, about 200 feet from her car. He determined that she was alive, and the Wales Center Fire Company was notified to respond to the scene. Immediate efforts were made to start warming her up, and she was carried to the roadway to meet the ambulance by Sergeant Belden, with assistance from Deputies David Makowski, Thomas Meredith, Thomas Was and State Trooper Chad Barry.
Ms. Maleski was transported the Erie County Medical Center by the Wales Center Fire Company, with paramedic assistance from Rural Metro Ambulance. No further information is available on her condition at this time.
No indications of foul play were observed at the scene. It is believed that Ms. Maleski had been in the Wales Creek Road area for several days.
