Firefighter Shane Ackerson died in a motor vehicle accident Wednesday night on Rochester Road. Now, the Medina Fire Department mourns the death of one of their own.
A funeral was held Monday morning in Medina, where family and friends gathered to say goodbye.
The following is a release obtained by Eyewitness News last week from the Medina Fire Department:
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Callman Firefighter Shane Ackerson. Firefighter Ackerson died in a motor vehicle accident while returning home from his job at Delphi, last evening shortly after 11pm.
Firefighter Ackerson joined the Medina Fire Department in September 2010. Shane was also a former volunteer firefighter for the Barker Fire Department, the Lyndonville Fire Department and the East Shelby Volunteer Fire Company. Shane was also certified as an Emergency Medical Technician.
“He had great skills and respectable bed-side manner,” said Captain RJ Morgan. “He and I recently took an ITLS class together, and Shane really excelled, even doing better than some Paramedics in the course.”
Though being in the department for less than a year, Shane quickly became part of the “family.” He had a witty personality and always made everyone laugh. In a Facebook message posted by brother firefighter Steve Cooley, it was evident that Shane’s impact is on the department was great. “The mark you left on all of us was bigger than you or your laugh,” Cooley said. “You made the bad days good and the good days great.”
Firefighter Ackerson leaves behind a wife, Bethany, and two small children, Marrisa and Catherine.
It is truly a sad day for Shane’s family and his firefighter family at the Medina Fire Department. Please join us in keeping the family, friends, and brother firefighters of Shane in your thoughts and prayers.
Funeral details are pending at this time. Information regarding funeral arrangements will be provided as soon as they are made available to us.
