Two spin-off companies from Roswell Park Cancer Institute - Tartis Aging Inc. and OncoTartis Inc. - are set to become the Thomas R. Beecher Jr., Innovation Center's newest tenants.

The companies will occupy a combined 5,700-square-feet of wet lab and office space on the center's fourth floor, with about half of the space being "built up" as the companies continue to grow, according to a news release from the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Corp., which oversees the center.

Both entities are discovery-stage biotechnology companies working on anti-cancer and anti-aging drugs. Their proprietary technologies are licensed from the labs of Andrei Gudkov, Roswell's senior vice president of basic science and chair of its Department of Cell Stress Biology.

Gudkov is the founder and chief scientific officer of Cleveland BioLabs Inc., and was recruited to Buffalo by Roswell in 2007. CBLI now occupies the former Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute building on High Street, which is where the two new companies got their start. They have a combined 15 employees.

"We are happy to find space in the Innovation Center, which allows us to expand our research and at the same time continue to be close to our colleagues at CBLI and Roswell Park," said Aleksandra Kotlyarova, director of operations for both companies, in the news release.

Forty companies are currently operating in the Innovation Center.
