BUFFALO–( release) Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced the unveiling of the $959,500 renovation project at North Buffalo’s Lafayette Ice Rink. Improvements include a new Zamboni, new ice rinks dasher boards and glass, and upgrades to locker rooms.
“This transformation has included the first significant infrastructure improvements to the rink since it was opened in 1989,” said Mayor Brown. “I am pleased that we were able to develop this vital recreational facility for North Buffalo. Lafayette Rink plays an important role in the quality of life of thousands of Buffalo residents. The enhancements made in recent years will provide a better experience for skating, hockey and staying active.”
The next improvements to be made to the rink include the delivery of a Zamboni and upgrades to locker rooms. Through city funds, a $85,000 new Zamboni was purchased and will be delivered to the rink in July 2011. A new concrete pad, drainage system and entrance were constructed for the Zamboni. The locker rooms will be completely renovated with state-of-the-art amenities including HVAC, electrical and plumbing features. The modernized locker room is now more suitable for the users of Lafayette Rink.
“It was essential that we eliminated problems like the Zamboni tracking debris onto the ice surface and upgrade the build’s sports-related infrastructure,” said Department of Public Works Commissioner Steve Stepniak. “Our improvements ensure that the North Buffalo Community Center and all Buffalo residents can enjoy the rink. This is a good step in the right direction to improving a highly used asset of the city of Buffalo.”
The North Buffalo Community Center is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ice rink. Ice-time rentals for hockey teams at Lafayette Rink provide a major source of revenue to the North Buffalo Community Center.
Improvements to the rink also include:
· Protective glass
· Rink Lighting
· Low Emissivity Ceiling
· Lennox Furnaces
· Temporary Parking Lot Expansion
Other improvements are planned for the Lafayette Rink: motion sensors for lighting controls, exit signs, building envelope weatherization and installation, variable frequency drives in mechanical room, photovoltaic lighting controls, heat recovery system.
