(Buffalo, N.Y.) It is a problem that happens every year.

Piercing noise from bottle rockets and neighborhood firecrackers scare animals so badly that they run away and end up lost.

It is not unusual for families to bring pets to a public fireworks show only to see them bolt away in terror as multiple explosions echo through the sky.

The Erie County SPCA tells Eyewitness News that many animal organizations are reporting high numbers of runaway and lost pets after this year's Independence Day Holiday.

The SPCA recommends that people looking for lost pets should try their local animal pound first.

Many local animal agencies have mandatory time limits for keeping a lost pet before it is turned over to the SPCA.
