Shelby, NY (WKBW) - A man was killed while walking on a street -- and apparently he was hit by several cars.

The Orleans County Sheriff's Office says the victim was walking in the road in the Town of Shelby before sunrise on Tuesday morning.

Undersheriff Steven Smith has identified the victim as 47-year-old Joseph Tillinghast of Medina. In a news release, Smith says Tillinghast was walking in the eastbound traffic lane on 10200 block of Maple Ridge Road.

Smith says Tillinghast was hit by a vehicle driven by George Gillespie of Lockport -- and then, while lying in the road, three other vehicles.

Deputies say the area is dim and does not have street lights or any other type of artificial lighting.

The sheriff's office says all four of the drivers stopped and waited for law enforcement to arrive.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the accident. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 miles per hour. The sheriff does not expect any criminal charges to be filed.
