Firefighters swarmed a house on the 1300 block of Sycamore Street near Goodyear Avenue after reports of thick black smoke coming from the windows was reported Friday night.
A firefighter noticed a man in a second floor window and desperately tried to rescue him but the man was found dead on the second floor of the home once firefighters were able to reach him.
A dog was also found dead inside but a neighbor who lives across the street said the dog had died long before the fire and its body had been lying dead in the house for at least one year. A fire captain on scene confirmed her statement.
One firefighter was rushed to ECMC after a serious back injury.
The vacant house was known in the neighborhood for being a place where squatters used drugs or slept for the night.
The victim's name has not been released. The investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing.
