Neighbors were on pins and needles outside of a home in Niagara Falls Wednesday night from about 5:15pm to 10:30pm where a man was reportedly inside armed with a gun.

It happened at a home on Meadowbrook Road near Lafayette Avenue in Niagara Falls. Police say a 48 year old male barricaded himself in a bedroom inside the house with what they thought was a gun. Later they discovered the man had a claw hammer wrapped in a towel.

According to neighbors the man lives at the home alone with his wife and there have never been any problems at the home before.

After hours of negotiating, police were able to get into the bedroom and remove the man without incident.

The man was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for a mental evaluation. Police are not releasing his name at this time and do not plan to file criminal charges.
