Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - Coach Lindy Ruff has been fired and officials say it is time to look toward the future.
Players found out about the firing Wednesday night before they headed to Toronto for their game, Thursday. There will be different leader behind the bench. Ron Rolston has been named the Sabres interim coach. Rolston has been the head coach of the Rochester Americans for the past two years. He will have a chance to earn the job in the next 32 games.
"The factors are were we are were we're going and conversations with Lindy about where the team was. I think last game was the kicker," General Manager Darcy Regier said.
Sabres Forward Thomas Vanek also commented on the issue.
"We didn't win games and that ultimately cost him his job. It's a very hard day for him but he's the top free agent out there and any team who gets him is going to get a great coach," Vanek said.
Ruff gone but it isn't the end of hard decisions for the Sabres top staff. The heat is on for General Manager Darcy Regier and other officials. They have the challenge of keeping successful veteran players, including Ryan Miller on the team once he becomes a free agent after next season.
