BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - It was 13 years ago when Megan McCormick's life changed forever.
"I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1999. It's good that its a slow growing tumor but it's bad because of the location, in the brain stem. It renders it inoperable", said McCormick.
The tumor caused her to develop weakness on the left side of her body and a condition called "Foot Drop", her left foot essentially had little to no movement, Megan says she became hopeless.
"I was in so much pain and I knew I had to something and I thought it would be a wheel chair because I didn't know any other way out of it," said McCormick.
Then it was her sister and mom who found an answer. It's called the L300.
"It takes over the part the brain would play. It provides stimulation to the nerve in my leg so my brain doesn't have to get the message to my foot so that it works property," said McCormick.
It helped her to walk again without the fear of falling but she says it's done even more.
"It has changed my life. Not only can I walk period. It's done so much for me emotionally. I used to be withdrawn from people, I was embarrassed," said McCormick.
Megan says she wants others in her position to know that there is a way to live a normal life, with the help of this apparatus. She says it costs about $8,000 and only some insurances cover it.
"I know that insurance are hesitant to cover it but I hope they would reconsider other people who need this device in covering it because it is truly amazing," said McCormick.
Megan also reach one major goal with the help of this device, walking across the stage at college graduation.
Now she has one message for others, "Don't give up that's my advice."
