Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - St. Joseph University School is located on Main Street in Buffalo. One thing that makes it stand out is the diverse population.
“It’s a school that attracts kids from all over the area, we have kids bussed in from the suburbs, some from the neighborhood. It's very ethnically diverse, racially diverse and economically diverse,” Father Jack Ledwon said.
Diversity is not all they have to offer. The school is the only Catholic school that has a gifted and talented program, they call it the FLIGHT Program. Sara Rodland is the teacher.
“The importance is trying to have the students become 21st century learners. If you talk to employers they are not looking for people who have the best resumes. They are looking for people who can think out of the box,” Rodland said.
These kids are eager to take their learning to a new level.
“It gets you to a high level of how you think about things,” Student Maya Lamacchia-Beeny said.
Many times Rodland will come into the classroom for a lesson or two.
“My favorite part is that it challenges your brain,” Student Caoilin Schaeffer said.
As they get older, along with the in class instruction, students are also put into smaller groups to focus in on their academic talents.
“When you work in smaller groups you can get more focused on you individually,” Student Jason Martin said.
Along with Flight, they also have an advance full day music program. Where younger students have class twice a week and there are even private lessons offers.
Teachers at the school like Mrs. Jessica Arnold said the teachers are always ready to teach and the students are excited to learn. She said that is the key to success.
That success showed at their awards ceremony on Thursday, where many kids got recognized for everything from high grades to excellent effort.
“We want each one of them to do their personal best. We want each one of them to maximize their own potential,” Father Ledwon said.
