Kenmore, NY (WKBW) - Mystery surrounds the death of a local bar owner
Police identify the man found inside of his Kenmore home as Vincent James "Jim" Cottone," the owner of Malone's Bar & Grill on Delaware Avenue.
Landers Road is usually quiet. However, Sunday morning, the tight-knit road was shaken to its core.
"You really don't expect this -- when it happens, it's jarring," says Erik Bakke, who lives just two houses down.
Mid-Sunday morning, the sounds of a woman screaming let neighbors know of something horribly wrong.
"I looked out the window, and I saw the woman who initially saw the man found in the house," says Alex Bakke. "She was running. She was very frantic about it."
Police say Cottone was found dead of apparent blunt force trauma at 21 Landers Road.
Neighbors say Cottone moved to the neighborhood a few years ago. About a year later, he bought Malone's Bar & Grill.
"From what I know, he's a really nice, gentle guy," Eric Bakke says. "He became a part of the community very fast."
More than a dozen people watched the investigation unfold. Some family and friends stood by in disbelief. Neighbors came by, worried about their safety.
"This just changes everything. Nothing like this has ever happened here," says Eric Bakke. "You really don't expect this -- when it happens, it's jarring."
However, Chief Peter Brietnauer says "The residents in the Village of Kenmore are very safe. I would say if they see anything or feel uncomfortable, not to hesitate to call the Village of Kenmore Police Department. Our response time is under a minute."
Police are not saying anything about a motive or suspects as of now.
Brietnauer says the village rarely sees murder. Their last homicide investigation was a 2011 stabbing at Drifter's Bar.
