Jury selection continues in the Muzzamill Hassan murder trial. Despite comments by the defense attorney that picking jurors is getting more difficult, more were selected Thursday...with interviews continuing Friday.
Hassan admitted to stabbing and beheading his wife in February of 2009. The crime happened at Bridges TV, a Muslim-American TV station that the couple owned in Orchard Park.
A jury of 12 with 4 alternates must be found.
Defense attorney Jeremy Schwarts said the lack of potential jurors may cause problems.
“There have been many people that have candidly admitted they formed opinions based on media coverage and if that continues for much longer we will have to request a change of venue,” Schwartz said.
If the jury selection process continues to drag on, either the defense or prosecution can request a change of venue. The request be granted by an appellate court judge in Rochester. Asking for a change of venue would delay the trial even longer than the nearly two years it has taken to get to this point in the process.
