Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) – The Marriott announced their plans to put a 96 room Courtyard Hotel in the Donovan Building on Main Street in downtown Buffalo, which once housed federal offices.
Benderson development is currently in the process of renovating the building. According to Business First, the hotel will take up the third and fourth floors of the eight-story structure. Courtyard Marriott is currently the 10th largest lodging brand with nearly 1,000 hotels worldwide,
The news follows an announcement by the Philips Lytle Law firm, which will be moving its current headquarters from the HSBC Towers to the Donovan Building.
Congressman Brian Higgins released a statement about the announcement.
“This provides evidence that the groundwork we have laid in recent months is paying off in jobs and is confirmation of the improvements we see every day,” Higgins said.
Although officials said the hotel venture is an exciting announcement, it is just part of a multi-million dollar improvement plan for Canalside. Over the summer, concerts will take place in the Central Wharf, as they did last year. Adirondack chairs have been purchased for people to relax in near the water. A beach has also been built for families to enjoy, right in the heart of downtown. Patrons can rent kayaks and other water sporting equipment on nice summer days. Officials are also encouraging local restaurants to move to the area. In the winter, they want to have ice-skating open to the public.
“We're putting in canals that's the key, it's public infrastructure. Its' a way for the public to get from one side of Washington Street all the way down to Canalside and it's going to be filled with restaurants, mixed use and excitement,” President of Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Tom Dee said.
Those canals and infrastructure are already under construction. The next phase of Canalside will become a reality sometimes this year.
The hotel is scheduled to open in late 2013.
