Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) – The Trayvon Martin case has the many around the country up in arms. Now, his alleged killer, George Zimmerman, is under arrest after more than a month of investigation. Prosecutors said he wasn’t arrested immediately because of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. This states that a person could kill another if they feel threatened, as Zimmerman claimed.
New York State Senator George Maziarz sponsored a similar bill in 2008. He is standing by his proposal, even after the Martin controversy. Maziarz has been a long time supporter of gun rights and believes people should be able to shoot to protect themselves if they are being threatened.
"I think that there are people now that want to take political advantage of it, some of my opponents. I believe very strongly that people should have a right to defend themselves when they legitimately, legitimately feel threatened,” Maziarz said.
Many disagree with his proposal. They said the Trayvon Martin case proves that the law has many flaws. They said it would lead to the death of innocent victims.
Those against the bill and a local Martin supporter spoke out about Zimmerman’s arrest.
"Locally, it gives us an opportunity to say the word segregated, to say the word prejudice, even if it's built around the Travyon issue, to now be able to have the conversation, because with conversation we have information, with information we might have transformation,” Buffalo Pastor Darius Pridgen said.
People will have to wait for the facts to play out in court. One thing is for sure, many have already formed their own opinions. The debate continues to sweep across the nation.
