Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) – Family members tell Eyewitness News the funeral for Abdifatah Mohamud, 10, will take place Thursday, according to Islamic funeral custom. This is just two days after he was found dead in the basement of a Buffalo home.

The alleged killer is the boy’s stepfather, 40 year old Ali Mohamad Mohamud. Police said Mohamud admitted to tying the boy up, stuffing a sock in his mouth and beating him to death. Authorities found the boy’s body in the basement of his home Tuesday night after other family members reported him missing.

Just hours later, Mohamud was located by police at the Buffalo News, where he worked as a security guard.

“”For him to be in a position of protecting others and then to harm his son,” neighbor Audrey Powell said in disbelief.

Family and neighbors said the young boy often complained that his stepfather was mean to him, but his cries for help went unanswered.

Eyewitness News learned from family members Wednesday night that the boy will be buried, Thursday.

In Islamic funeral tradition, the burial takes place as soon as possible. The body is washed and wrapped in cloth and buried. The family then mourns for three days.

The boy attended Buffalo’s International Preparatory School where they will have student support on hand for anyone having trouble dealing with this horrific situation.
