BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Congressman Brian Higgins says Buffalo's Skyway is just functionally obsolete, and wants to see the structure torn down to promote more development on Buffalo's waterfront.

Higgins says the cost for upkeep on the Skyway is estimated at $125 million for the next 20 years.

He is calling on the Department of Transportation to end long term maintenance for the bridge, so it can review other options... An idea that just isn't going to happen anytime soon, according to the Department of Transportation.

The Skyway handles about 45,000 vehicles per day. Congressman Higgins will address the media this morning on Buffalo's waterfront at 10:30 A.M.

We will have an Eyewitness crew at that meeting and will bring you the very latest developments on Higgins' plans through the day, just stay with Eyewitness News and WKBW.com
