BUFFALO, NY (release) - The Erie County Sheriff’s Office announced that an inmate who was inadvertently released from the Alden Correctional Facility Thursday evening, was taken back into custody Friday afternoon on the city’s east side without incident.

32 year old Awet Gebreyesus of Busti Avenue in Buffalo was initially charged with assault of his domestic partner earlier this year, however a grand jury indicted him on attempted murder.

The mix-up in his inadvertent release began when a civilian clerk mistakenly misread the suspect’s paperwork.

The paperwork in question was initially received from City Court ordering Gebreyesus’ release; however the clerk neglected to read the attached documents to the paperwork which indicated that Gebreyesus had been indicted on attempted murder , arraigned, and ordered held without bail.

Currently, Gebreyesus is being housed at the Erie County Holding Center.

An internal investigation has begun by the Sheriff’s Office Division of Professional Standards.
