LAS VEGAS, NV (WKBW-TV) - Dan Wheldon, 33, was killed Sunday afternoon after his car went flying through the air during a 15-car accident at Sunday's Las Vegas Indy 300.
Wheldon was injured when his car got airborne after hitting another in the Lap 12 accident, then apparently caught part of the catch fence just outside of Turn 2.
He died moments later on his way to the hospital.
IndyCar Chief Executive Officer Randy Bernard said Wheldon sustained "unsurvivable injuries." The race has been canceled and drivers did a five-lap salute in Wheldon's honor.
We will have the very latest on this tragic accident tonight on Eyewitness News at 6 and 11 and on WKBW.com.
