Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW) - How would you like to design a better Buffalo? Here is your chance.

"The competition is about promoting sustainability for the City of Buffalo," Contestant and Architect Greg Proefrock said.

This is a contest called "Designing to Live Sustainably". It is a competition where anyone in the community can submit ideas to improve the Queen City.

"We have a lot of vacant property so we created a competition where architects, block clubs, residents can submit ideas for use of that space. We also want to get students involved with coming up with idea," Organizer Dave Bauer said.

The proposals can be anything from using solar heat on a mixed-use building, to rooftop gardens, even using wind for energy. Proefrock is with Kean Wind Turbines. He is part of the competition. Proefrock's company invented small wind turbines. Although it is only a proposal, he hopes to someday team up with a local charter school. Proefrock said his product would save the school energy and a lot of money

"This is a wind turbine that generates more energy than the typical wind mill and it's much smaller. We could take this apart and put eight or ten on the school to satisfy their power needs," Proefrock said.

There have been 23 proposals submitted already. Then the ideas will be presented at a gala with developers and others who can make the proposal into a reality.

"We can bring two or three or four ideas to a developers. Then, we hope they will bring in the funding that will allow us to create those physical places," Bauer said.
