(West Seneca, NY) Buffalo State College student, Madeline Tuft, doesn't know who they were, or how they did it.

All she knows is that identity thieves stole bank information from her Paypal account and used it to transfer $145 to themselves.

"I was really stressed when I first found out," comments Madeline Tuft.

The young woman is just one of over eight million Americans who have their identity stolen each year.

Financial loses related to identity theft are over $50 billion dollars.

During the 4th annual "Protect Your Identity Week," groups like the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo are trying to raise awareness of the crime and its impact on victims.

In Madeline Tuft's case, it took over two months to fix her problem.

"You put your trust into a company like Paypal with your bank information, and it just happened," adds Tuft.
