According to a USA Today report, New York City officials on Friday ordered a mandatory evacuation of 300,000 residents living in waterfront areas and announced an impending shutdown the city's subway and bus systems as precautions in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Irene.

"You only have to look at the weather maps to understand just how big this storm is, and how unique it is. And it's heading basically directly for us," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a Friday news conference.
