BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Opening ceremonies for the 27th National Veterans Golden Age Games were held in downtown Buffalo Thursday night.

700 senior veterans will compete in 15 sporting events during the six-day event, giving vets a chance to prove that age is truly just a number.

"When I was younger, when people were 60 I said 'Boy they're old.' That's not so true anymore," said veteran Robert Darch, 80, of Batavia.

His friend, 83-year-old Alan Abrams, said keeping active is a big part of growing older, living longer and staying healthy.

"With me I've always been active. And always enjoyed sports. And I was a coach for a number of years," Abrams said.

The games wrap up with closing ceremonies on Tuesday.
