BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard says a clerical mistake made by a civilian employee led to the accidental release of a attempted murder suspect over the weekend.

Awet Gebreysus, 32, who does not speak a lot of English, is back behind bars after he contacted his court-appointed interpreter, who in turn, contacted authorities.

Howard says the accidental release was caused by a paperwork screw up.

"It's the result of human error. Over the next few days we'll learn more and more about the specific cause, what allowed this to happen," said Howard.

Gebreysus was arrested in January, accused of stabbing his wife at the Wegmans on Amherst Street in Buffalo.

Sheriff's department officials say steps were taken to ensure the woman's safety while Gebreysus was out of jail.
