House Explosion In Tonawanda

TONAWANDA, NY ( WKBW ) A home in the Sheridan Parkside neighborhood of Tonawanda blew up and caught fire Wednesday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the blaze, before beginning their investigation into what caused the explosion.

Wednesday afternoon, the Town Of Tonawanda Police released this information regarding the situation.

The Town of Tonawanda Police Department is investigating a residential fire at 9 Hale Court that resulted in one seriously injured person. The call was received at approximately 9:30am when other residents nearby heard a loud explosion.

Multiple fire companies, including Sheridan Park, Brighton, Ellwood, Kenmore and Kenilworth, responded to manage the fire fighting operations. Jonathan Smith, the 23 year old resident of 9 Hale Court, was taken to ECMC for treatment of serious burns. Information obtained during the course of the investigation appears to indicate an intentional act by the victim that led to a gas explosion.

Detectives and Fire Investigators collected evidence and have not ruled anything out at this time. The structure will be demolished due to the extent of the damage.
